Making Bath Time Fun
Many pets dread having a bath - so endeavour to make bath time as positive an experience as possible.
Helpful hints:
·Use lukewarm water (test on your forearm first). Too hot or too cold will create a negative experience
·Ensure the water pressure is not too strong or this will frighten your pet.
·Use shampoo specifically formulated for cats and dogs and follow product instructions.
·Wet your pet down first. Starting with the legs is less invasive for your pet.
·Apply the shampoo and start with the legs and work your way forward toward the head.
·Massage the shampoo well into all areas of the coat including between the paw pads to make sure the dirt and grime are lifted from the coat.
·Be careful around the head and ears area. It may be useful to use a face washer.
·When ready to rinse start at the head, in case any shampoo has gone into the eyes. Tilt the head upwards to drain shampoo away.
·When rinsing the ears tilt the head to the side you are rinsing to limit the amount of water/shampoo that may enter the ear canal. This will help to prevent infections.
·Rinse your pet until the water runs clear of suds.
·Have towels ready prior to starting so you don’t have to put your soaking wet pet down to run wild through the house.
·Gently squeeze the fur until you have taken as much water out as possible. By the end your pet will still be wet but not dripping everywhere.
·Only bath your pet during the cold weather if absolutely necessary, or if you have a warm fire or area for them to completely dry.
·We are trying to end the bath experience on a happy note so blow drying your pet is not always recommended as the noise may scare them, and there is increased chance of burns to your pet’s skin.
·Bathing once a month is preferred as too much frequent bathing may strip your pet’s coat of their natural oils and may cause skin irritation in some pets.
·We are happy to discuss with you the best grooming schedule and type of shampoo for your pet.
